Cloudy Hot Tub Water: Causes and Fixes
Cloudy water is usually a balance or filter problem. Test before you add chemicals, because too much of one product causes as many problems as too little.
Safe checks you can do
- Test the water with a test kit for sanitizer, pH and alkalinity.
- Clean or rinse the filter. A worn filter may need replacing.
- Adjust the water balance, then shock the water as the product label directs.
- If the water is old and still cloudy, drain and refill. Turn the spa off at its breaker before draining.
Chemical safety
- Never mix chemical products together. Add one product at a time.
- Follow the label for how long to wait before using the spa after adding a product.
- Keep chemicals away from children and pets, and store them dry and sealed.
Do not use the spa while
- The water is cloudy, or the sanitizer reading is outside the range on the product label.
- Restart use only when the water tests in range and the product label says it is safe.
Stop and call us if
- The water stays cloudy after a clean filter and a balanced test.
- The sanitizer will not hold, or the water has a strong smell.
- The equipment that treats the water, such as an ozone or UV unit, is not working.
If you have skin or eye irritation
- Stop using the spa and rinse with clean water. Do not use the spa until the water is retested and balanced.
- If irritation continues, see a doctor.
